What is IPPT?

The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) is a mandatory annual fitness assessment for all Singapore Armed Forces National Servicemen and Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNS).

🎯 Purpose

IPPT ensures that all NS men maintain a baseline level of physical fitness required for operational readiness. It measures muscular endurance, core strength, and cardiovascular fitness through three standardized stations.

📋 Three Stations

Push-ups: Maximum repetitions in 1 minute
Sit-ups: Maximum repetitions in 1 minute
2.4km Run: Timed running test

⏰ Frequency

ORNS men must pass IPPT once per training cycle, typically annually. The IPPT window opens at the start of each NS training year. Passing early exempts NSmen from Remedial Training (RT) sessions.

How IPPT Scoring Works

IPPT uses a points-based system where your performance in each station contributes to a maximum total score of 100 points.

📊 Point Distribution

Each of the three stations contributes points based on your performance:

  • Push-ups: Up to 25 points
  • Sit-ups: Up to 25 points
  • 2.4km Run: Up to 50 points (weighted more heavily)

The scoring tables are adjusted by age group and gender, with more lenient requirements for older age groups to account for natural physiological changes.

🎖️ IPPT Scoring Factors

Age Group: Scoring is divided into 9 age brackets (18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+). Each bracket has different minimum requirements.

Gender: Male and female servicemembers have separate scoring standards tailored to physiological differences.

Vocation: Combat vocations like Commandos, Guards, and Naval Divers face higher standards with more stringent requirements for each station.

📈 Example Score Calculation

A 28-year-old male NSman performs:

Station Performance Points Earned
Push-ups 40 reps 20 points
Sit-ups 45 reps 22 points
2.4km Run 11:30 38 points
Total 80 points (Gold)

IPPT Awards & Incentives

The Singapore Armed Forces rewards NSmen who maintain excellent physical fitness with monetary incentives.

🥇 Gold (75-100 points)

$500

Achieving IPPT Gold demonstrates exceptional physical fitness. NSmen who score 75 points or higher receive a $500 monetary incentive, the highest award tier.

🥈 Silver (61-74 points)

$300

Silver award recognizes very good fitness levels. NSmen scoring between 61-74 points receive a $300 monetary incentive for their achievement.

✅ Pass (51-60 points)

$0

Pass status meets the minimum fitness requirements. While no monetary incentive is awarded, passing IPPT exempts NSmen from mandatory Remedial Training (RT).

❌ Fail (0-50 points)

RT Required

NSmen who score below 51 points must attend Remedial Training (RT) sessions to improve fitness and reattempt IPPT. RT consists of structured fitness programs.

💡 Maximizing Your IPPT Award

To optimize your IPPT score and earn higher incentives:

  • Focus on the 2.4km run: Worth 50 points, improving your run time yields the biggest score gains
  • Train consistently: Regular training throughout the year prevents last-minute cramming
  • Use this calculator: Track your progress and identify which stations need improvement
  • Proper technique: Ensure correct form for push-ups and sit-ups to maximize valid repetitions
  • Take early attempts: Multiple attempts are allowed; taking IPPT early gives you time for retakes

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about IPPT and how to use this calculator

What is IPPT in Singapore?
IPPT stands for Individual Physical Proficiency Test, a mandatory fitness assessment for all Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) National Servicemen. It consists of three stations: push-ups, sit-ups, and a 2.4km run. NS men must pass IPPT annually to fulfill their fitness requirements. The test measures muscular endurance, core strength, and cardiovascular fitness.
Is this IPPT calculator accurate?
Yes, this IPPT calculator uses official SAF scoring tables updated for 2025. The scoring system is based on age groups and gender, with accurate point allocation for each station. Results match official IPPT scoring used by MINDEF. We regularly update the calculator to reflect any changes to official scoring standards.
Does SAF use different scoring by age?
Yes, SAF IPPT scoring is adjusted by age groups (18-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+). Older age groups have more lenient requirements to account for natural aging. Each age group has specific scoring tables for push-ups, sit-ups, and 2.4km run. This ensures fair assessment across different ages.
How many points for IPPT Gold?
IPPT Gold requires 75 points or more out of a maximum 100 points. Achieving Gold earns a $500 monetary incentive. Each station (push-ups, sit-ups, 2.4km run) contributes points, with the run weighted most heavily at 50 points maximum. Silver award is 61-74 points ($300), Pass is 51-60 points (no incentive), and Fail is below 51 points (requires RT).
How often must NS men take IPPT?
Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNS) must pass IPPT once per training cycle, typically annually. The IPPT window opens at the start of each NS training year. NSmen who pass IPPT early can skip Remedial Training (RT) sessions. Multiple attempts are allowed within the training cycle if you fail or want to improve your score for a higher incentive.
What are the IPPT awards and incentives?
IPPT awards include: Gold (75+ points) earns $500, Silver (61-74 points) earns $300, Pass (51-60 points) with no monetary incentive, and Fail (below 51 points) requires Remedial Training. These incentives encourage NSmen to maintain physical fitness. The monetary awards are automatically credited after achieving the respective scores.
Can I retake IPPT if I pass but want a higher award?
Yes, NSmen can retake IPPT multiple times within their training cycle to achieve a higher award tier. For example, if you Pass but want to achieve Silver or Gold for the monetary incentive, you can book additional IPPT sessions. Only your best score within the cycle counts for awards and RT exemption.
What happens if I fail IPPT?
NSmen who fail IPPT (score below 51 points) must attend mandatory Remedial Training (RT) sessions. RT consists of structured fitness programs designed to improve your performance in the three stations. You can reattempt IPPT during or after RT. Failing to attend RT or pass IPPT may result in additional training requirements.
