What Is IPPT for NSmen?
The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) is a mandatory annual fitness assessment for all Singapore Armed Forces National Servicemen (NSmen) and Full-time National Servicemen (NSF). For NSmen, also known as Operationally Ready National Servicemen (ORNS), IPPT is a critical requirement to maintain operational readiness throughout their reservist obligations.
IPPT measures three key fitness components through standardized exercises: muscular endurance (push-ups and sit-ups) and cardiovascular fitness (2.4km run). The test ensures that all NSmen maintain a baseline level of physical fitness required for potential mobilization and operational duties.
For NSF serving their full-time National Service, IPPT is conducted regularly throughout their service period. Active servicemen must pass IPPT to fulfill their fitness requirements during their two-year commitment.
IPPT Requirements for NS and NSF
All NSmen are required to pass IPPT at least once per training cycle, which typically runs annually. The IPPT window opens at the start of each NS training year, and NSmen must achieve a minimum score of 51 points to pass.
📅 Frequency
NSmen (ORNS): Must pass IPPT once per annual training cycle. Multiple attempts are allowed within the cycle.
NSF: Take IPPT multiple times during their two-year full-time service, typically every 6 months or before key milestones.
🎯 Passing Criteria
NSmen must score a minimum of 51 points out of 100 to pass IPPT. Failing to pass requires attendance at Remedial Training (RT) sessions until a passing score is achieved.
💰 Incentive Awards
NSmen can earn monetary incentives: Gold (75+ pts): $500, Silver (61-74 pts): $300. Passing early in the cycle allows NSmen to skip RT sessions and claim their incentive.

How IPPT Scoring Works for NSmen
IPPT uses a points-based scoring system that allocates up to 100 points across the three test stations. The scoring is standardized across all NSmen and NSF, with adjustments based on age group and gender to ensure fair assessment.
Point Distribution
- Push-ups: Maximum 25 points based on repetitions completed in 1 minute
- Sit-ups: Maximum 25 points based on repetitions completed in 1 minute
- 2.4km Run: Maximum 50 points based on completion time (weighted double due to importance of cardiovascular fitness)
The 2.4km run is the most impactful station, contributing 50 out of 100 total points. This weighting reflects the importance of cardiovascular endurance in military operational readiness. For NSmen looking to maximize their score, improving run time yields the biggest gains.
Age-adjusted scoring ensures fairness: older NSmen have more lenient requirements to account for natural physiological changes. For example, a 40-year-old requires fewer push-ups than a 25-year-old to earn the same points. Use our IPPT points calculator to view detailed scoring tables for your age group.
What Happens If an NSman Fails IPPT?
NSmen who score below 51 points fail IPPT and must attend mandatory Remedial Training (RT) sessions. RT consists of structured fitness programs designed to help NSmen improve their performance and pass on subsequent attempts.
🏋️ Remedial Training (RT)
RT sessions focus on improving fitness across all three IPPT stations through structured exercises, cardio training, and technique coaching. NSmen must attend all scheduled RT sessions unless medically excused.
🔄 Retake Opportunities
NSmen can reattempt IPPT during or after completing RT sessions. Multiple attempts are allowed within the training cycle. Only your best score counts for award purposes and RT exemption.
⚖️ Consequences
Failing to attend RT or pass IPPT may result in additional training requirements or administrative actions. NSmen should prioritize fitness training throughout the year to avoid RT obligations.
To avoid RT and maximize your chances of passing on the first attempt, use this IPPT calculator regularly to track your fitness progress and identify areas needing improvement.
IPPT Gold, Silver and Pass for NSmen
NSmen can achieve different award tiers based on their total IPPT score. Higher scores earn monetary incentives and recognition for maintaining excellent fitness standards.
🥇 Gold Award (75-100 points)
$500
Gold represents exceptional fitness. NSmen scoring 75+ points demonstrate outstanding physical readiness and earn the highest monetary incentive of $500. Achieving Gold requires strong performance across all three stations, particularly the 2.4km run.
🥈 Silver Award (61-74 points)
$300
Silver recognizes very good fitness levels. NSmen scoring 61-74 points earn a $300 monetary incentive. Many NSmen target Silver as an achievable goal that still provides significant financial reward for maintaining fitness.
✅ Pass (51-60 points)
$0
Pass meets the minimum fitness requirement. While no monetary incentive is awarded, passing IPPT (51-60 points) exempts NSmen from mandatory Remedial Training and fulfills annual fitness obligations.
❌ Fail (0-50 points)
RT Required
Scores below 51 points result in failure. NSmen must attend Remedial Training (RT) sessions to improve fitness and reattempt IPPT. Failing carries no monetary penalty but requires additional time commitment for RT.
